EARTHWATCH 2003 PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The goal of the Earthwatch Institute is to educate the public about science and technology to create a more informed populace. One of the many ways Earthwatch works toward this goal is by sponsoring Awards Expeditions for talented students. One of these expeditions is Transient Phenomena in Astrophysics, the Earthwatch Student Awards Program hosted by the Los Alamos National Laboratory. Participating students become faimiliar with the Fenton Hill Observatory site in the Jemez Mountains outside of Los Alamos and are given a chance to tour the Very Large Array in southern New Mexico. Students are able to listen to a number of renowned spieakers discuss current issues, concerning both astrophysics and science in general. Students also spend time exploring the cultural diversity that is so abundant in northern New Mexico. For descriptions of specific events, consult the 2003 schedule.
